Fire Chief
Fire Chief is the highest ranking officer within the department. It takes years of experience and knowledge to achieve this position and responsibility. The chief of the department works a 40 hour shift Monday – Friday.
Responsibilities include:
- Department administration
- Establishing policies and procedures
- Maintaining the department operating budget
- Ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations
- Maintaining working relationships with surrounding communities
- Department liaison between the township elected officials and department heads
- Continuously evaluating the department's ability, and available resources, to meet the needs of the community
Fire Marshal
The Fire Marshal is a supervisory position within the department overseeing fire prevention, investigations, and public education. Additional duties focus on the prevention and reduction of the incidence of fire by fostering increased awareness of fire safety in the community. The Fire Marshal works a 40 hour week, Monday – Friday.
Responsibilities include:
- Fire inspections (liquor license, new business, public shows, fireworks/ explosives, complaints, permit issuance inspections, and general maintenance)
- Enforcement (applicable laws, regulations, codes and ordinances relative to the protection of life and property)
- Fire Investigations (Origin and cause, incident documentation, evidence collection, court testimony as needed)
- Plan review (Site and construction)
- Fire Safety Consultation
- Represents the Fire Department before the Township Board, District or Circuit Court concerning fire prevention matters
- Citizen complaints
- Public Fire Education
- Supervision (Directing, coordinating training, and prioritizing shift Fire Inspector duties)
- Procedures and Ordinances (works closely with the Township attorney when adopting ordinances, amendments, and later additions of the International Fire Code)
- Responds to emergency and nonemergency calls as needed
Captain
Captain is the highest ranking shift command officer and shift supervisor. The Captain works 24 hour shifts, supervises department/daily operations and provides incident management for large scale and high risk incidents. The Captain responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, and continuously monitors department training programs and needs.

Sergeant
Sergeant is a supervisor position within the department. The Sergeant works 24 hour shifts under the direct supervision of the shift commander. He/She directly supervises incidents and daily operations in the absence of the shift commander. The Sergeant responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.

Firefighter
Firefighter is the entry level position within the career or full time ranks. They work 24 hour shifts under the direction of the a company officer. The firefighter conducts vehicle checks and equipment inventory at the start of each shift to ensure all apparatus and equipment are ready for response. The firefighter responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.

- Public relations/education

Part-Time Firefighter
Part-Time firefighters are employed to provide support to the community under the supervision of the career staff. Probationary Part-Time Firefighters must complete extensive training before becoming eligible to respond in earnest on behalf of the fire department and the community. They must pass a state certified written test and practical exam to receive their Firefighter II classification. They must also pass a written and practical test to receive their National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
Veteran Part-Time Firefighters are a vital resource and an integral component of the department. Part-Time Fighters are required to work a minimum of 24 hours a month.
